The finance department records and reports all financial activities of the City of Bessemer City and monitors all revenues and expenditures. Assistance is provided to all departments with the annual budgeting process. Other financial services provided for the City are purchasing, billing, and customer service.

Services
The City of Bessemer City provides water, sewer, garbage and natural gas service to its citizens. We strive to maintain accurate utility bills and to assist customers with their billing questions. Utility bills are mailed on or about the 25th of each month and are due by the 10th of the next month. A 5% late fee will be applied to all unpaid accounts after the 10th. Services are subject to disconnection after the 15th if payment arrangements have not been made. To apply for new services, come by the office, fax or e-mail an Application for Utility Service. Valid photo identification, your social security card and a rental receipt with the exact service address is required. Once application is made, the deposit amount will be determined according to the schedule below. Deposits are not required of homeowners. A copy of the Deed of Trust is required of homeowners.

If applicant(s) does not have a credit score, the Alert amount will apply. The credit score is obtained from On-line Information Service and the City does not have specific knowledge or control of the actual credit score.
Payment Options
Customer Service hours are 8:00am - 5:00pm, Monday - Friday. An after-hours drop box is provided for your convenience. As of November 15, 2006, the City is no longer a Duke Power pay agent. We accept cash, check, and money orders for payment. We do not accept credit/debit cards. Up to two (2) extensions per year for service payments are available at a fee of $5.00 each. The extension extends the due date from the 10th to the month end. Homeowners using Bessemer City gas service can apply for Budget Billing- an equalized payment plan which spreads the cost of natural gas equally over an eleven (11) month period and catch up on month twelve (12). Contact Customer Service for details on these payment options. Knowing your account number when you call will expedite service.

Garbage Collection
The City of Bessemer City contracts with Waste Management for garbage collection. Everyone within the City limits is required to have garbage collection. Residents and small businesses are provided with Waste Management rolling garbage containers. The charge per container is $8.50 per month and will be billed on utility bills. The garbage containers must be on the roadside by 7:00am on the day of collection. Residential units are limited to two (2) containers. Small commercial sites may have more containers at the $8.50 per can fee. The Public Works Director decides when dumpster service is required for commercial sites, churches, non-profits, etc. Dumpster service is not provided by the City. Businesses requiring a dumpster must contract with a waste removal service. If you have problems with your collection or container, please call Waste Management at 1-800-273-0438.

Privilege Licenses
Privilege licenses are required for all businesses within the corporate limits of the City. Apply for a license in the Utility Department of City Hall after you have complied with the zoning and code enforcement regulations. Renewals are mailed each June and are due by July 1st.
