Job Description
An employee in this class is responsible for providing reception, customer service, and accounts receivable work for the City. Work involves public contact functions and coordination with other departments within the City’s organizational structure. Work also requires considerable knowledge of the City’s utility customer service policies and field activities. Considerable tact and courtesy are required in these public contact functions. Work is performed under regular supervision and is evaluated through conferences, by review of appropriate records and reports, and the accuracy and thoroughness of assigned responsibilities. Works under the direction of the Finance Director.

Job Description
Firefighters respond to emergency calls as a member of the Fire Department’s engine, aerial ladder, rescue truck or first responder teams to extinguish fires and perform first aid and rescue services, authorized and responsible for the extinguishment of fires, assists the public with nonemergency requests or complaints. Conducts fire prevention inspections, fire hydrant testing, pre-fire planning, fire prevention education, and minor repairs and maintenance on facilities, apparatus and equipment.
Duties and Responsibilities
In the performance of their duties, the Firefighter places equipment, lays and connects hose; operates high-capacity pumps and directs water streams; raises and climbs ladders; uses chemical extinguishers, safety belts, lines and hooks and uses self-contained breathing apparatus.
The Firefighter may enter burning buildings as part of a fire suppression team, perform ventilation tasks above ground, carry heavy objects and equipment and rescue injured or trapped victims.
Perform preventative maintenance on firefighter apparatus and related equipment to include checking fuel and oil supply, battery, lubrication, tires, motors and ignition system.
Prepare written reports and records pertaining to fire, medical and technical subjects.
Required knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of:
Modern fire service principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment.
Fire protection systems, evacuation considerations, and building construction regulations for fire safety.
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions using the English language.
Obtain or possesses and maintain certification as an EMT-Basic or IV Tech, or Intermediate, when eligible per County standards.
Maintain physical conditioning necessary to perform efficiently in emergency situations; meet medical and physical agility standards as established.
Learn the geography of the District, the location of important buildings and the street system.
Physical Demands
Work is performed primarily in the fire station, then on emergency medical scenes, mass casualty, fire scenes and extra ordinary events as they occur. Performing tasks under emergency conditions may require strenuous exertion.
Educations and/or Experience
Graduation from high school and it is desirable to have obtained an associate’s degree and/or a four-year college degree in fire suppression, emergency medicine or a related field

Possession of valid North Carolina driver’s license (Class B)
Firefighter Certification
Emergency Vehicle Driver (EVD) Certification
EMT or MR (Medical Responder) Preferred

Police Officer: An employee in this class performs a full range of general law enforcement duties. Such duties may include but not limited to: patrolling the city during an assigned shift in a police car or on foot; preventing, detecting and investigating disturbances and major crime cases; performing traffic control work; apprehending suspects; and executing related assignments. Employees must exercise judgment, initiative and calm control when performing duties. Work involves frequent public contact, which requires tact, firmness and decisiveness. Work is performed in accordance with departmental policy and state and federal law, supplemented with specific directions from superior officers. Employees are subject to the usual hazards of law enforcement work. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Police Sergeant or Police Captain and is evaluated through observation, discussion and review of reports.
