Solid Waste Changes
Bessemer City recently renewed the solid waste collection contract with Waste Management. With the new contract there will be changes to the type of waste that will be collected. These changes will take some time to adjust to, so please keep this newsletter as a reference point for future collection. The effective date of the changes will be July 1, 2006.
Among the changes, the biggest impact to be noticed will be in bulk collection. Many of the items that were previously picked up by the contractor will no longer be accepted, and the City does not run a bulk collection program. Please pay particular attention to this list. You will need to make other arrangements for disposal of these materials.
Items that will not be collected by the City or Contractor:
• Furniture
• Mattresses/box springs
• Building Materials (wood, cabinets, etc.)
• Remodeling materials (carpet, etc.)
• Bulky debris (large boxes, lawn furniture, swings)
The City will continue the “rental truck” program. With this program, residents can reserve a city truck to load the materials at their residence. The city will take the debris to the landfill the following day. The cost to reserve the truck is $25, which is put towards the landfill disposal fee.
Following disposal, any amount over the $25 will be billed to the resident. The truck can be reserved by coming to City Hall, completing an application and paying the $25 fee

Yard Waste Collection
Limb Collection Reminder City Ordinances require that limbs be no longer than 5ft. in length, and no larger than 6 inches in diameter. We cannot collect limbs if other debris is mixed with them, or if they exceed the required length & size. We are seeing an increase in contracted work being placed at curbside for collection. We do not collect yard waste resulting from any type of contracted work.
Leaf Collection During the spring/summer months, the City will collect bagged leaves. The Leaf Vacuum Program begins in October of 2006. After that date, no bagged leaves will be collected. Also, leaves mixed with other debris cannot be vacuumed. Burning permits are not issued during the leaf vacuum season.

| Collection Containers |
|
Among the changes with the new solid waste contract is a limit to the number of roll-out containers that will be allowed per residence. One can is currently provided, and additional cans are requested by calling City Hall. We will in turn contact Waste Management to order an additional can, and begin billing for the can on your next utility bill. Residential units will be limited to two (2) cans. The charge per can will be $8.50 per month and will be billed on utility bills. Small commercial sites can have more cans, at the $8.50 per can fee. The Public Works Director will decide when dumpster service is required for commercial sites, churches, non-profits, etc.
