We are home to small business and multi-national firms ranging to just a couple of employees to hundreds. It is an exciting time for Bessemer City! We invite you to explore the opportunities for your business in our community. The Department of Economic Development is here to work for you!
What We Do
The Department of Economic Development works with commercial and industrial development projects. The department works closely with the Gaston County Economic Development Commission (EDC) and other regional organizations in order to promote, assist, and direct economic activity.
Since Bessemer City is a Small Town Main Street Community, recognized through the North Carolina Department of Commerce’s Main Street Center, we work closely with this organization as well. Bessemer City was designated in 2011 as a Small Town Main Street Community. Today, the Bessemer City Downtown Development Group works to revitalize downtown with the Main Street 4-Point Approach®:
4) Economic Restructuring.
If you are interested in working with a Bessemer City Downtown Development Committee, please let us know!
The Bessemer City Area Chamber of Commerce, Gaston Regional Chamber, Gaston EDC, Charlotte Regional Partnership, and other organizations are groups the Department of Economic Development works with to improve the economics of Bessemer City and the region. Specifically, the Gaston College’s Small Business Center (SBC) is one of 58 across the state of North Carolina. This state-funded organization is a part of the Small Business Center Network of North Carolina (SBCN). It was initiated by the NC General Assembly to aid small businesses since they are the backbone of North Carolina’s economy. Click here for more information!
Look under Forms and Documents and you will find a map of the downtown historic district. If you have questions about this, you can always ask!
By requesting an Economic Development Package, the department will supply you with information related to available properties, development assistance, and other necessary information. You can also browse the “Sites & Buildings” section of the City’s website as well.
Incentives are targeted for downtown business development. Visit our page on incentives to review the guidelines and requirements for downtown incentives.
