WORK SESSION MEETING
July 28th, 2015
The Bessemer City Council met for a work session on Tuesday, July 28th, 2015 at 3:30PM in the Council Chambers of City Hall. Proper notice was given.
Call to Order
Mayor Becky Smith called the meeting to order and thanked everyone for attending.
Mayor: Becky Smith. Council Members: Dan Boling, Kay McCathen, Joe Will, Howard Jones, Alfred Carpenter, and Donnie Griffin were all present. Also present was City Manager, James Inman.
City Manager’s Report
City Manager, James Inman, reported to Council the City’s water shortage condition. Mr. Inman explained to Council that the region is experiencing a severe drought. Mr. Inman assured Council that there will be no water shortage issues because the City is connected to the City of Kings Mountain’s system and the City of Gastonia’s system. If necessary, the City can purchase water from either municipality.
Mr. Inman went on to recommend a Stage One Water Restriction because of the lack of rain. He explained that this may prevent the City’s need to purchase water; however, if drought conditions continue, the City would have no other option. He also explained that Stage One Restrictions are on a voluntary bases and are not mandated.
By consensus of Council, the City Manager was given permission to institute Stage One Water Restrictions.
Presentation from Commissioner Carpenter
County Commissioner, Joe Carpenter, along with County Manager, Earl Mathers, and Gaston County Economic Development Commission (EDC) Director, Donny Hicks, presented information to City Council regarding the expansion of South Ridge Business Park and future land use option for property around Bessemer City.
Discussion was held regarding future projects in Bessemer City and the region.
Being no further business to come before the board, the meeting was adjourned at 4:41PM by motion of Alfred Carpenter and unanimous vote.
