Have you heard of Juneteenth? If not don’t fret, just keep reading! Juneteenth was a day of emancipation/freedom for thousands living in bondage in Galveston, Texas in 1865. Juneteenth is celebrated on June 19th. Get it? June + Nineteenth = Juneteenth. Creative, huh? Specifically, this holiday marks the anniversary of when Texas learned that President Lincoln had declared slavery illegal. The City of Bessemer City will host our 4th annual Juneteenth Festival in Centennial Park on Friday, June 17th, 2022 from 6:00 – 9:00 PM.

As you know from reading above, Juneteenth commemorates the end of racial chattel slavery across the United States. Juneteenth continues to be important, not just because it marks the end of slavery, but because it retells the story of Black people’s ongoing struggle, and the equality we aspire to have. This equality can only be attained by everyone and every race of people working together. Juneteenth is a celebration that everyone is welcome to attend, no matter your heritage. So join us in downtown Bessemer City this Friday, June 17th at 6 PM to celebrate!
