Subject:          City Hall Customer Service/Finance Division Relocation Notice

On Friday, March 2, 2018, following an air quality test, the City of Bessemer City was advised that City Hall’s HVAC system, along with some ceiling tiles and a portion of the ductwork that service both the first and second floors, is in need of replacement. The building’s HVAC system is causing a moisture issue in the air at City Hall.

The report indicates that there are elevated counts of Alternaria and Cladosporium in the Customer Service/Finance Division office space on the first floor of City Hall. Although this mold exposure is not toxic, it can affect individuals with autoimmune deficiencies. More information on these mold types is available at https://www.cdc.gov/mold/faqs.htm.

Our top priority is to limit exposure to City staff and citizens while remediation and cleanup efforts are taking place. The City of Bessemer City is also committed to providing a healthy, clean environment for staff and members of the public. Fortunately, we were able to determine this issue before it worsened.

The City will relocate the Customer Service/Finance Division to the Kiser Senior Center (123 West Pennsylvania Avenue, Bessemer City, NC 28016) on Monday, March 26, 2018. The division will remain at the Kiser Senior Center until repairs and cleanup efforts are completed. Programming at the Kiser Senior Center is canceled, or will be relocated to the Allan Farris Community Center (when possible) until further notice.  For further information contact James Inman, City Manager at 704-629-5542 or jinman@bessemercity.com.

Citizens may visit this temporary location to pay utility bills and speak with City Hall administrative staff. While we understand that this location change may be inconvenient; the safety of our staff and the public is the City’s number one priority.

Utility bills can still be paid online at www.bessemercity.com or mailed to 123 West Pennsylvania Avenue, Bessemer City, NC 28016.
