The Lofts at Osage Mill in Bessemer City, North Carolina, have been recognized by Preservation North Carolina with the DeWayne H. Anderson Sr. Award for Housing, an honor recognizing innovative preservation and reuse of historic buildings to create housing.
The Osage Mill project transformed a historic 1895 textile mill that had fallen into disrepair into 139 affordable residential housing units. The redevelopment demonstrates how historic industrial buildings can be preserved while being given a practical new purpose that serves the community.
The DeWayne H. Anderson Sr. Award is Preservation North Carolina’s highest honor specifically for the creation or preservation of housing in historic buildings. The award recognizes projects that successfully combine historic preservation with new or updated housing, including affordable and downtown housing solutions.
Osage Mill is an example of adaptive reuse, preserving an important piece of North Carolina’s textile history while bringing new life and housing to a previously underutilized property.
