Bessemer City Swears In New Police Chief Christopher Vaughn
Bessemer City, NC — The City of Bessemer City is proud to announce that Christopher Vaughn was formally sworn in as Police Chief by Mayor Becky S. Smith during the regular City Council meeting held on April 13, 2026.
Chief Vaughn formally assumed his role following the retirement of former Police Chief and Public Safety Director Thomas Ellis Jr. A dedicated member of the Bessemer City Police Department for six years, Vaughn previously served as Deputy Police Chief and brings a strong foundation of leadership, professionalism, and community-focused service to his new position.
As Chief, Vaughn will continue to strengthen the department’s role within the community, emphasizing collaboration between residents, businesses, and public safety personnel. His leadership is expected to further enhance the department’s commitment to service, integrity, and public trust.
“I am deeply honored to serve as Police Chief for Bessemer City and truly humbled by the opportunity to lead such a dedicated group of professionals,” said Chief Vaughn. “I look forward to building upon the strong foundation already in place and continuing to foster meaningful relationships within our community.”
Mayor Becky S. Smith expressed confidence in Vaughn’s leadership and vision for the department. “We are extremely pleased to have Chris Vaughn serve as our Police Chief,” said Mayor Smith. “He has demonstrated a deep commitment to our community and a strong ability to lead. I have full confidence in his leadership and trust that he will continue the department’s proud tradition of service to our citizens.”
City Manager Josh Ross also affirmed the selection, citing Vaughn’s experience and alignment with the City’s mission. “Selecting Chris Vaughn as Police Chief for the Bessemer City Police Department was an obvious choice due to his distinguished leadership experience, focus on service, and dedication to carrying out the mission and vision of both the department and the City,” said Ross. “I believe Chris will do an outstanding job moving forward, continuing the strong leadership our police department has demonstrated for many years. We are excited to see him lead the department forward and appreciate his focus on the community and BCPD staff.”
