Job Description
The City of Bessemer City is seeking a skilled, dependable, and highly motivated professional to join our Public Works Department as a Water Plant Maintenance Technician. This position performs critical work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of machinery and equipment within the City’s water and sewer treatment plants and pumping stations.
Employees in this class perform journey‑level mechanical work involving the operation, maintenance, and repair of large and specialized equipment used in water and sewer treatment facilities and pumping stations. Work includes maintaining and repairing pumps, motors, valves, and related mechanical and hydraulic systems. Duties require mechanical and plumbing trade skills, with some knowledge of electrical repair.
Employees work in both indoor and outdoor environments and may be exposed to loud noise, vibrations, moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, scaffolding, chemical fumes, odors, mists, gases, dust, poor ventilation, oils, extreme heat, and extreme cold. Work also requires handling raw sewage in accordance with OSHA bloodborne pathogen standards, and employees may be required to wear a respirator.
On‑call and call‑back duties are required. Work is performed under regular supervision and is evaluated based on effectiveness, timeliness of repairs, and overall system performance.
Job Requirements
- Education: Graduation from high school and experience in mechanical repair, treatment plant operations, or pump maintenance preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid Driver’s License.
