On Monday, February 9th, the Bessemer City Council proudly declared February 2026 as African American History Month in Bessemer City.
In 1976, Black History Month was formally recognized nationwide to honor and affirm the vital role African American history plays in our shared American experience. This month serves as an opportunity to promote cultural enrichment, celebrate heritage, and uplift the lives and achievements of remarkable African Americans who have shaped our nation.
